If you’re waiting for the sweet, misty-eyed tale of how my mother placed a thimble on my tiny finger and I instantly knew I was destined for a life of fiber arts..… you’re going to be waiting a while.

Growing up, my mom sewed out of sheer necessity. But it wasn’t some whimsical artistic calling—it was pure economics. Oh, there are still a couple of special items I can fondly remember that she made for me, but it was primarily mending torn knees, hemming hand-me-downs, and sewing practical clothes. Because, well, that’s just what practical moms did.  To my younger self, the hum of that sewing machine sounded less like creative magic and more like a sentence to chore duty.  I wanted absolutely nothing to do with it.

In fact, my avoidance strategy was legendary.  In junior high, our school had a rigid policy:  in those days girls either took band or home economics to learn to cook and sew.  I wasted no time.  I grabbed onto a clarinet solely to stay as far away from home ec as possible. (Sorry, Ms. Picarella--nothing personal!)

Yet, life clearly has a wicked sense of humor.

Fast forward a 'several' decades, and the girl who practically hid behind a woodwind instrument to dodge a needle and thread is now head-over-heels obsessed with all things fabric.  Turns out sewing isn't just about utility--it's a dynamic art form, a tactile sensory playground, and an outright addiction when you pair gorgeous quilting cottons, texture, and color balance with clever patterns and design.

Today, my studio is stuffed with scraps. bolts, vintage stash finds, and endless creative chaos, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Coral & Olive Creative was born from that exact joy: proof that you don't have to be “born with a needle in hand” to fall head-over-heels for the craft.
